A man who spiked sweets with sedative and distributed them to children at a summer camp in the region has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two young males both between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight minors and an older person became sick at the facility in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from that region, pleaded guilty to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the courthouse on Friday.

Nevertheless, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old boy.

The defendant was held in detention prior to a further hearing on late November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, detailed the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She explained his those affected were disadvantaged youngsters who were staying at a youth camp which he operated.

The defendant conducted a "sweet game" with the minors, Mrs Prior said, in which he would access the boys' rooms when they were settling down and tell them to consume candy "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge Ruben had engaged in this activity with the young males "repeatedly", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She stated the defendant had been capable of justifying this for many years as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had worries in recently.

Mrs Prior KC continued: "Recently" his stepson had worries about the activities, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to examine in the defendant's belongings."

The legal counsel explained materials including lubricant, ointment and syringes were discovered, and his stepchild alerted the authorities about his worries.

She said the man went on to conduct the "sweet game" with six youngsters that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"Law enforcement" had not arrived by that stage," she continued.

The police watchdog, the police conduct office, previously told that it was examining law enforcement's management of the events.

The legal representative stated the children were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities again.

She explained the man then engaged in the "candy game" in a room of five youngsters.
