No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
